Amurrio acquires a new machine for the welding of rail to crossings

by | Jun 18, 2018 | Press releases

The brand new Stationary Flash Butt Welding System, recently purchased by Amurrio to weld the rails to the crossing, is already assembled, adjusted and tested.

This new equipment comes to join the foundry, machining and pre-assembly facilities of the company based inAlava, which allows it to complete the cycle of production of railway turnouts entirely in its facilities.

This ensures quality throughout the process and significantly shorten delivery times.

Welding

The union of the frog or crossing to the rail is one of the critical points in a railway turnout due to the great precision that it requires. In addition, the alloys with which the crossover and the rail are made (manganese steel and carbon steel, respectively) present a great difficulty in welding.

With the new flash-butt welding equipment, Amurrio can now use the welding process that has shown the greatest efficiency, durability and guarantee in this type of joints in its own facilities.

Optimized work flow

To house the new equipment, one of the older workshops of the Amurrio factory has been completely refurbished.

It is a diaphanous building with a large useful surface, initially built in 1929, from which the exterior walls and facades have been preserved and restored for their architectural value.

In addition to the welding machine itself, the same workshop houses the auxiliary equipment needed to complete the process and thus deliver the crossings finished.

The ample space available in the workshop has allowed an optimal arrangement of the equipment in order to achieve an agile workflow and maximum efficiency.
